If you’re looking for action and activity, there’s a lot to see and do

Places to visit

There are lots of things to see and do in the immediate vicinity of La Flotte if you want to go out for a gentle wander or have a meal.  Pretty Mortagne Port is just a mile away with excellent restaurants along the waterfront overlooking the harbour.  This pretty French town has restaurants, bakers, butchers and a small but incredibly well-stocked Co-op.

Saintes - an old Roman city complete with amphitheatre and a collections of old churches and abbeys. Also some good shops and an excellent market daily.

Royan - as well as having a massive beach Royan has good shopping with an excellent market.

La Rochelle - very pretty old town and port with superb shopping and restaurants. The indoor food market is particularly luscious.

Cognac - well worth a trip for the town but throw in a tour or too around the distilleries and the day flies by!

St Emilion - a popular trip out to see a beautiful town and some good wine tours.

Bordeaux - an impressive city plus possibly the world's most important wine centre.

Bordeaux and Medoc wine towns - well worth a bit of a tour and the odd case or two.

Pineau Charentes houses - Pineau is a local speciality being an aperitif wine fortified with Cognac. Our neighbours on two sides have free degustation with no obligation to buy (although it is difficult to resist).

For those looking to enjoy the French beaches whilst on holiday there are plenty of options. Whether it is a quiet sandy beach for the family or a surfers favourite spot La Flotte is within easy reach of the perfect beach.

The nearest beaches are 15-20 minutes up the coast at Meschers - these are small coves with safe sandy beaches.Another 5 minutes further up are the huge sweeping beaches of St George and Royan, each with loads of space and some watersports and full safety patrols.

North of Royan is the Grand Cote - several miles of sandy beaches with some local beach patrols and naturist bits (if you pardon the expression). Finally a little further (say 40 minutes from La Flotte) is the Cote Sauvage, again good sandy beaches but where the rollers come in off the Atlantic - a favourite with the surfers.

Sports and activities

Here are a selection of activities you could choose from: table tennis, badminton and boules as well as lots of space to play.

In the local area of La Flotte there are facilitites for:

Golf - good courses at Saintes, Cognac and especially Royan

Walking - Again great walks from the door.

Cycling - There is great cycling straight from La Flotte with miles of quiet country lanes.

Fishing - The lake at the end of our grounds is packed with fish and is privately owned (and hence quiet) and we have arranged for fishing rights with the farmer who owns it.

Tennis - Mortagne has a tennis court which is in good condition.

Wildlife - We have wild boar, deer and hares although all of these are a little shy birdwatchers in particular will be particularly happy with a wide variety of birds

Windsurfing - great facilitites for windsurfing.

Children's Activities

Usually the pool at La Flotte and local beaches, but if you want a special trip out to entertain the youngsters, there’s a zoo up the coast at La Palmyre (large and spacious but busy on those rare dull days). There’s also the aquarium at La Rochelle and just 90 mins drive away is the impressive Futuroscope at Poitiers.

Many visitors come to La Flotte and this area of France for peace, quiet and seclusion. But if you’re looking for more action and activity, there’s a lot to see and do in the area. If you prefer to stay in for the day there’s also plenty to keep you busy from swimming in the pool (with security fencing) complete with outdoor rattan sun loungers and plenty of umbrellas to reading the papers on a sofa in the covered relaxation area. We have a children's play area including climbing frame with swing and slide, basketball practice net and swing-ball.
